Loudoun could play role in DC’s Olympic bid

The nonprofit organization Washington 2024 and a who’s who executive board of Washington businesspeople and sports owners on Sept. 4 announced their intention to bring the Olympics to the nation’s capital with the unveiling of the website dc2024.org.

In preliminary discussions Robert Sweeney, one of the heads of the project and the president of the Greater Washington Sports Alliance, connected with Loudoun officials about a few potential Loudoun venues like Morven Park and Beavercreek Dam Reservoir.

“Hosting the 2024 Olympics can both create jobs and provide a lasting legacy in sport, tourism and culture that will benefit our region in the long-term,” said Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who voiced his support for the capital region’s initiative earlier this year.

'The Last Five Years,' 'Imitation Game' to Headline Middleburg Film Festival
For the second year, Middleburg Film Festival brings the world of cinema to Virginia's wine country. Starting October 30 and running through November 2,  Middleburg will screen festival favorites and Oscar hopefuls in Virginia's historic wine country for the fest's sophomore year.

Highlights include opener Richard LaGravenese's ("Behind the Candelabra") musical "The Last Five Years," starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. Morten Tyldum's "The Imitation Game" will screen as the Centerpiece on November 1.

"With the success of our inaugural festival, we aim to grow The Middleburg Film Festival into a true destination event for the Washington region," said MFF founder Sheila C. Johnson. "Our wonderful films coupled with the beauty of Middleburg in the fall make this a can’t-miss attraction." Tickets are now on sale via the festival's website.

    N. Virginia Set to Overtake New York as Biggest Data Center Market by 2015

Northern Virginia will overtake the New York metro as the biggest multi-tenant data center market in the country by the beginning of next year, according to 451 Research. The region, whose data center market is mostly concentrated in Loudoun County, is now nearly tied with the New York-New Jersey area in terms of size.

“With a torrent of cloud service providers and media/content providers deploying significant workloads is Ashburn, the market is solidifying its position as the epicenter of the Internet,” Levy said. “Northern Virginia has grown to be one of the top colocation markets in the United States, and we believe that by early next year it will overtake NY/NJ as the largest US multi-tenant data center market in the U.S.”

22 Loudoun Companies Are Among Fastest Growing in Nation

Inc. Magazine’s list of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. is out, and 22 of Loudoun County’s businesses made the cut.

This represents a 57 percent increase over last year, when 14 companies made the Inc. list. Economic Development Director Buddy Rizer attributes the growth to the county’s strong I.T. sector.

“Many of the companies on this list have something to do with I.T., which employs almost 30 percent of the Loudoun workforce,” Rizer said.

Metro and the Washington West Film Festival are encouraging the region to take the "Silver Line to the Silver Screen."

Running from October 22-26, the festival screens many of its selections at the Bowtie Cinemas at Reston Town Center, which is now accessible to Metro riders via the new Silver Line.  The 2014 official film selections will be announced this Thursday, September 25th. Official film selections will include feature narratives, feature documentaries, and short films from thirteen nations around the world.

Visit www.filmfest.com for more information about this innovative and exciting film festival, which gives 100% of its regular screening box office net proceeds to a project or team working to solve a problem of hunger, education, disease or displacement.

County floats names for Ashburn Metro stops

Loudoun's Board of Supervisors signed off Wednesday night on name suggestions for the county's two forthcoming Metro stations in Ashburn, slated for a 2018 opening.

According to the county's public information office, the names for the eastern station in Ashburn, near Route 606, are: Broad Run; Dulles Gateway; Dulles North; Loudoun Dulles North; Loudoun East; Loudoun Gateway.  For the second station, at Route 772, the suggestions are: Ashburn; Loudoun Gateway; West Loudoun.

These tags are being released to the public for feedback. Loudoun County will hold two dates-to-be-determined community input meetings on the station names, and then submit a final county recommendation to Metro's board of directors, which has a final decision-making authority. The new station at the Dulles airport in Loudoun will be called the Washington Dulles International Airport Station.
