Friends Surprise Former Para Olympian by Stocking Home

What's better this time of year than coming up with the perfect gift?

Some friends in Northern Virginia know how that feels after delivering a surprise that will make a real difference in one man's life.

News4's Zachary Kiesch was there for the big reveal.

Ringing In Hope: A  New Year’s Eve Celebration!

For a second consecutive year, colder-than-usual weather stumbled upon the New Year's Eve Ringing In Hope event, but it didn't keep the runners away or the celebration from taking place!  Nearly 1,000 participants registered for this annual celebratory racing event! Participants, ranging from little ones in strollers to our treasured seniors braved the chill of New Year’s Eve morning and joined up for the 5K and 10K race, and 1K Fun Run.

The events kicked off at 9 am as children proudly wore jingle bells around their necks to “ring in hope” for the new year as they made their way around the 1K Fun Run course along with family and friends.  Pony rides and a barrel train, glitter tattoos, music, a balloon artist, moon bounces, and more offered entertainment for the younger ones after the Fun Run/Walk.

The pre-race warmups attracted large crowds as runners did all they could to stay warm, and at 10 am, the 5K and 10K runners set off on their respective races.

Nearly $5,000 in awards and prizes were awarded during the event to winners from each age category as well as to overall winners and recipients of raffle prizes, thanks to the generosity of our community supporters and sponsors.

This year’s race beneficiaries included Loudoun Habitat for Humanity, and Volunteers of America – Chesapeake (Loudoun Homeless Services Center), both of whom were on hand with their own exhibits and to interact with the crowd.

For more information please visit the website.  Photos from the event can be found here and video here.

The Silver Line effect: Tower Companies eyes town center for Loudoun interchange

For nearly 30 years, The Tower Companies has held onto more than two dozen vacant acres at a busy Loudoun interchange. With the Silver Line on its way, the time is finally ripe for its development.

The Rockville-based developer is in the earliest stages of planning a new town center for 28 acres located immediately south of the Sully Road (Route 28) interchange with Old Ox Road, on the east side of Route 28. An affiliate of the developer has owned the land since 1986. It is currently approved for an "old-style office park" that would be "functionally obsolete" if it were built today, said Eric Posner, The Tower Companies' director of asset management.
"We're just exploring possibilities under the town center overlay zoning," Posner said. "We think this is a great, great area. We think it should be the economic engine for Loudoun."

Loudoun Closes On Silver Line Loan From Feds

Loudoun’s government announced in December that it has closed on a $195 million federal loan to help finance Metrorail’s Silver Line extension to Ashburn.

The low-interest loan and associated $1.3 billion loan to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority will help MWAA hold Dulles Toll Road rates at current levels through 2018 and limit future toll increases, officials said.

“The signing of the loan documents is the culmination of an immense team effort over a lengthy process,” Hemstreet said in a prepared statement.
